(Diabolo Dance)

Introduction
The encounter between the traditional and the contemporary
Since 1986 when The Diabolo Dance Theatre was founded, it has merged traditional diabolo with contemporary dance and gymnastics. It is the first artistic performing group that combines these creative elements with theatrical ideas. Under systematic and professional direction, these young performers, ranging from 8 to 24 years old, have gone through an overall and strict training, including the skill of playing diabolo, sense of musical rhythm, ballet, gymnastics, jazz, and martial arts. The performers have to master every skill and combine all of them into a unique and creative style, Diabolo-Dance.
Actually, practicing Diabolo-Dance is much more difficult than it looks. It demands the combination of skillful diabolo playing, accurate physical coordination and control with musical rhythm. Each outstanding performance is built upon the individual’s strength, speed, rhythm, and accurate interaction between each other. In addition to their own hard practices for years, their successful performances are also attributed to the hard work of The Diabolo Dance Theatre’s teachers and staff.
The Theatre’s professionalism and creativity can be seen in the choreography, music, lights, special visual effects, stage design, and the group management. All this behind-the-scenes support, led by the Director of Arts, Le-Chun Liu, has brought the group’s collective energy into utmost play.
Through the Theatre’s efforts for the past twenty years, it has led to enthusiastic response from the audience and been highly appraised by the New York Lincoln Center, the Hummingbird Center Canada, the National theater Taipei, Council for the Cultural Development and Planning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan and so on. In addition to performing in Taiwan, it is also frequently invited to perform overseas, playing a very important role for the performing art of Taiwan. With this experience and reputation, the group will continue performing in many countries and introducing Diabolo-Dance to audiences around the world. Hopefully this will create more opportunities for culture exchange and allow Diabolo-Dance to continue growing into the new century.
The Diabolo Dance Theatre from Taiwan
A lively encounter between the traditional and the contemporary
“The presentation drew a very large audience of between 2500 and 3000 people, very diverse and very happy and enthusiastic with the presentation……Each number was wonderfully thought out and artistically presented.”
-- Jenneth Webster, Producer, Lincoln Center Out of Doors
“The Diabolo Dance Theatre is very quiet, yet very hard working. Their energy is so powerful that I cannot wait to see their next creation.”
-- Lin, Hwai-Min, Founder and Artistic Director,
The Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan
The Story of Playing Diabolos
Diabolos have been one of the popular toys for children in China for over 4000 years. Chinese kids liked to create new tricks and showed them in games with kids from other villages. In the 16th century, the diabolo was brought to Europe by French and English missionaries and had once become a fashion game among the upper-class people.
Spinning, tossing, swinging, looping and bouncing are the five basics in playing the diabolo. A real player can create numerous complicated yet beautiful tricks by these five basics. For a better control of the rolling diabolo, the player needs to learn how to breathe along with the movement and how to concentrate on the flying diabolo. The techniques are mixed of gymnastics and Kong Fu.
The evolution of playing diabolos in Taiwan is the result of a long-term dedication to practice and experiment. For the Diabolo Dance Theatre, diabolo playing goes beyond a game and has become the total performing arts of drama, dance and music.

The Artists
Artistic Director Liu, Le-Chun
As a Art Director and Founder, Liu’s passion in diabolo and performing arts has been burning for more than 20 years. He has a sharp sensitivity to the spatial relationship with objects and bodies. All visual images on the stage appeal to his analytical eyes. He has successfully promoted the status of diabolo as a folk art onto a unique genre of performing arts. Breaking the boundaries between various art forms, he introduces music and dance into diabolo playing. Diabolo becomes an art with a life of its own.
Producer Bian, Kuo-Hwa
She believes that everything is possible if we are willing to be an objective person. To reach a particular goal for a production, she is used to orchestrate all the different ideas in a clear format, and coordinate creative inputs of various kinds. Bian definitely knows how to transform life into art and vice versa.
